As part of an AT&T campaign themed on area codes, Dapper Dan (real name Daniel Day) and ASAP Rocky (real name Rakim Mayers) join forces to retell the legendary designer’s come up in Harlem, whose area code is 212, during the ’70s and ’80s.
Titled “Kings of Style,” the video opens with Day and Rocky reenacting their first meeting in Harlem. From there, Day narrates his own rise and fall, starting with selling boosted fur coats from the trunk of his car in Harlem to having his own atelier where his designs were highly coveted by the City’s drug dealing kingpins, athletes and rap artists.
The video also includes the light bulb moment when Day was inspired to take the concept of designer logos from bags to garments. “If this man wears a purse just to show off a designer logo, damn, suppose I can have him walking around like a designer bag. Street style was born that night,” he explained.
