Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion has had enough of every company in the world jumping on her signature “hot girl summer” phrase to put some cool on their brand and has announced a plan to take sole ownership of it.
Throughout the summer, companies including Wendy’s, Forever 21, Fenty Beauty and ever Future have used some form of the phrase in an effort to push their product on social media.
In a push back, Megan’s team filed a trademark on July 10th, the same day a fan on Twitter suggested she file papers to make the phrase exclusively hers.
While it’s worth a shot, copyrighting a phrase using three commonly used words might not produce the results Megan is hoping for. Case in point, Cardi B filed for copyright protection for the much more distinct “okurrr” in March 2019 and was denied by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office just two months later, according to Billboard.
