Singer/songwriter SZA (real name Solána Imani Rowe) checked in with Kerwin Frost for a laid back exchange that included some tasty morsels of information form the generally reticent performer.
SZA fans will be happy to know the singer has been in the studio and recently recording a song with Justin Timberlake, BROCKHAMPTON and Jack Antonoff. SZA also mentioned being happy about music she recorded with Post Malone. She noted she’s very much in a music zone these days so much so that she recently turned out repeated requests to contribute to a track from an artist she loves.
On prior collaborations, SZA described some features as not feeling fully recognizable to her energy. She described her records with Khaled, Cardi B, Maroon 5 and Rihanna as “not me.” She added, “It’s not to say they’re bad songs but my body doesn’t recognize it. That version of myself on that song is unfamiliar to my spirit.”
On the topic of her famed mane of hair, SZA revealed she’s become a fan of wigs because of hair loss brought on by over-processing her natural hair. She explained, “I think I was hiding behind hair hella too though. Because also, when I
“I was like ‘I don’t wanna wear a wig and I’m too good to wear a wig, I’m gonna just like have my natural hair or I’m gonna take care of my hair and I’m gonna just do my little tutorial,’ but my hair fell out real fast from all the manipulation of like doing shit. And then I died my natural hair orange and then I took it too a level 10 blonde and if I was a white girl that shit was fitting to not fall out, and then all of it just came right out. And then I was like damn, I guess I’m wigging. And then I got into wigging and I didn’t know what it meant to me.”
Recalling life pre-Ctrl, SZA revealed she worked at the age of 17 as a bartender at a strip club, a job that enabled her to record music in the day time. One evening she recalled being hit in the face with a roll of dollar bills and realized the job wasn’t for her.
