Brooklyn-based designer Rui Zhou puts an artful spin on the active lifestyle look with a collection presented during New York Fashion Week. Making use of dramatics cut outs and layered colors, Zhou’s head-turning designs straddle the line between activewear, clubwear and lingerie.
Born in China and educated at Parsons, Zhou says her designs are inspired by an examination of the garment as it interacts with the body.
In an interview with Vogue Italia, she explained, “My work always explores the interaction between a garment & the body. I see a garment as a second layer of skin, and through my research, I study the space between skin and fabric, body and garment, entities and boundaries Also, the shapes are inspired by the fabric the body changes the shape of the second skin. The external and internal space of human beings is intertwined with external distortions and internal spaces. “
