North Carolina-native Rapsody made a noteworthy hair style statement while in attendance at the BET Hip Hop Awards, an event held in Atlanta on Saturday (October 5, 2019). Bucking the stick straight, long-hair trend, she wore an updo accessorized with Swarovski crystal-covered curlers with a silver foil track suit paired with Nike x Comme des Garçons sneakers.
Rapsody’s (real name Marlanna Evans) look was styled by Misa Hylton, while her hair was styled by Atlanta-based Terrence Davidson. The Swarovski crystal curlers were custom-made by A-Morir designer Kerin Rose.
In an email exchange with Snobette, Rose provided some insight on the effort. She explained, “I have been fortunate enough to have been working with Misa Hylton for quite a while now. So when she hit me up and said, ‘Can you make crystal rollers?’ The answer was ‘Heck yes!’ I didn’t even ask who it was for because Misa is a legend and all of her clients are as well. Finding out they would be used for Rapsody was a treat, she’s a rare authentic talent.”
The New York-based designer noted, “It was a very collaborative process between me, Misa and Rapsody’s hair stylist, Terrence Davidson. From a technical standpoint this project was very complicated. I had to make sure the hair had space to go and that the crystals could fit between the sponge rollers and the closures, so each roller was painted, cut, and rematched with a painted closure that would fit the crystals. I made 18 rollers in three different sizes and I knew once I tested them on my own hair that they would look amazing for the occasion.”
