The Recording Academy announced the 62nd Grammy Awards today (November 20, 2019), reflecting the organization’s continued efforts to embrace new artists. Artists garnering the most awards included Lizzo (eight), Billie Eilish (six), Lil Nas X (six), Ariana Grande (five) and H.E.R. (five). Among the top nominee earners, Lizzo, Eilish, and Nas X are all first-time Grammy nominees.
While the Academy has done a better job of embracing a more diverse list of new artists, notable performers left off of the r&b nominations include Summer Walker, Kehlani, Ari Lenox and Normani.
The lack of female rapper nominees is also a disappointment. After winning a Grammy for her album in 2019, Cardi B is the only female artist who earned a nomination but only as a featured artist on her husband Offset‘s “Clout” track. After a monster year, Megan thee Stallion’s exclusion feels borderline preposterous though Saweetie and Doja Cat also had amazing break out years.
Alicia Keys will return as host the ceremony for the second year in a row, making her the third woman and the first female musician to host the show twice.
The Grammy Awards will take place on January 26, 2020 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The broadcast will air live on CBS at 5:00 PM EST.
