Known for handbags starting at $10,000, Hermès is about to make the entry into its very exclusive circle much wider. Two years in the making, the Paris-based company is entering the beauty category, a grouping it will kick off with a lipstick collection called Rouge Hermès.
The effort will be followed by additional categories with plans for a complete make-up range by 2023, followed by a skincare line.
The debut lipstick line features 10 matte and 14 satin lipsticks (a total referencing the company’s 24 rue du Faubourg Paris flagship address), whose texture is said to mimic the softness of Hermès’ bag leather while the shades are inspired by its iconic silk scarves. The lip-focused launch also includes a lip balm and lip shine, a universal lip pencil and a lip brush.
Adding another does of exclusivity, each lipstick will feature a custom-blended scent of sandalwood, arnica and angelica, created by the highly-regarded Christine Nagel, director of Hermès Parfums.
Designed by Hermès creative director of jewelry and shoes, Pierre Hardy, the bullet-shaped container makes a classically modern statement with lacquered, brushed or polished metal hardware akin to that used on handbags.
Each lipstick is packaged in a canvas pouch contained in Hermés much-coveted orange box, which is sold wrapped in recycled paper. To add even more pop to the flex, Hermès has also revealed a small selection of leather lipstick carrying cases.
Priced at approximately $70 for the lipstick and $42 for refills, you can anticipate the lipstick collection will launch at Hermès’ stores in March 2020.
