Paris-based Rick Owens continues his collaborative efforts with Champion with a spring 2020 collection of clothing described by the well regarded designer as “stripped-down togas loincloths and robs.” In reality, the unisex collection includes multiple mesh tops, a long sleeve bodysuit top styled with the snap left open, a miniskirt, shorts and briefs, all of which are offered (of course) in either black or pearl.
First revealed last year year on Owens’ spring 2020 runway in Paris, items are adorned with the sub-brand DRKSHDW’s signature elongated star along with the Champion “C” logo.
“I remember my older, cooler cousins wearing Champion sweatshirts and shorts in the seventies, cementing that logo in my brain,” said Owens who was born and raised in Porterville, California. ‘When I started my label in the ’90s, I hand drew my logo as a cross between the Champion logo and a Jean Patou perfume label. They both had a similar vintage calligraphic flair. I wasn’t conscious of it then, but I see now how that balance has defined my ongoing aesthetic.”
As it happens, Champion manufactures in a factory Italy close to the one Owens uses. Commenting on the coincidence, Owens explained, “This allows us to produce a fully made in Italy collection in the same region under increasingly environmentally responsible conditions.”
Ranging in price from $176 for briefs up to $480 for the bodysuit, sRick Owens and Champion collection are now available on Rick Owens online shop.
