Teyana Taylor has dropped a video for her single “We got Love,” featuring multi-Grammy-winning Ms. Lauryn Hill. An ode to black love, the Spike Tey-directed visual showcases Taylor’s loving relationship with her husband, Iman Shumpert, and their four-year-old daughter, Iman “Junie” Shumpert.
The Kanye West-produced “We Got Love” track was first revealed in a K.T.S.E. album listening session in 2018 and was performed by West and Taylor on “Saturday Night Live” in September 2018. Originally planned for inclusion on the West-produced album, the single was held up by clearance issues.
An ode to Africa, the visual opens with Taylor and her husband sitting on a throne. Wearing traditional African clothing, head pieces and accessories, Taylor and her dancers are shot against scenes inspired by rural African villages. The video ends with a montage of loving images of Taylor, Shumpert and her daughter bonding with a voice over of Hill speaking on the importance of love.
In her distinctly rich voice, Hill states, “Above all, you keep your clarity, you keep your focus. You keep your sense of love, and you keep your sense of purpose. Those are integral. You know, they’re key. Happiness, you know? A lot of people define success differently. For me you could everything, you could have all the money in the world, but if it’s enjoyable, if it’s not sustainable, if you can’t be a person of integrity while having all these things, what does it matter? What does it mean? The value is internal. Your value is internal.”
Taylor is working on on a follow up to her K.T.S.E album, but there as of now there’s no official release date. First slated for a December 2019 drop, in an exchange with Elton John on his Beats 1 Radio “Rocket Hour” show, Taylor said the album will “definitely” drop sometime in 2020.
When asked if West will produce the album, she explained, “This one is a little bit of everybody. I want to kind of explore a little bit more, get a couple more people involved, to really, really bring to life my vision.”
