While there have been plenty of leaked images, Prada and Adidas Originals today (November 30, 2020) officially announced the debut of the Luna Rossa sneaker, part two of their collaborative efforts together, which kicked off in 2019 with a Superstar and bowling bag.
Offered in white, the lace up shoe is rooted in Prada and Pirelli’s sponsorship of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team, which will wear the shoes as they prepare to represent Italy in the 36th edition of the America’s Cup planned for March 2021.
The Luna Rossa takes its designs queues from archival Prada and Adidas shoes as informed by the new AC75 Luna Rossa boat. Reflecting the sustainability themes of Prada’s Luna Rossa offerings, the upper is made of a recycled material called Primegreen. Perforated and detailed with Adidas’ three stripes, the upper is encased in a water resistant translucent outer shell.
Taking some technology ideas from Adidas, the shoe features a perforated Boost midsole along with a wrap-around, water-resistant outsole. Packaged in a co-branded box, the shoes are packed inside a water-resistant bag.
Commenting on the effort, Prada head of marketing Lorenzo Bertelli, stated, “Since the beginning of the collaboration, the exchange with Adidas has been very interesting. We found that we have the same kind of approach when it comes to product development. For this shoe, everything started from the needs of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team. The shape of this new style, the innovative and sustainable materials, the performing details have been specially designed for the sailors.”
Prada established the Luna Rossa sailing team in 1997 and has participated in the America’s Cup for over 20 years. While not currently involved, Adidas provided clothing and equipment to an opposing team from 2005-2007.
Prada launched its first America’s Cup-inspired shoe in 1997 as part of a performance line called Linnea Rossa. Officially known as the PS0906, the popular series of leather and mesh shoes were referred to as America’s Cup.
Priced at 550 euros ($657), the white version of the shoe will launch on December 9, 2020 at Prada boutiques and Adidas flagship stores worldwide, as well as select wholesale accounts. The shoe will also be available at the brands’ online stores.
