Like many artists, Teyana Taylor today (December 4, 2020) posted her Spotify 2020 Artist Wrapped results on Instagram. While Taylor’s numbers are solid, she used the moment to let fans know she’s had it with the music industry and is retiring.
After thanking her fans for their support she let it be known she’s sick of what she perceives as a lack of love. Taylor wrote, “I ain’t gone front in times of feeling super under appreciated as a artist, receiving little to no real push from the ‘machine,’ constantly getting the shorter end of the stick, being overlooked.
Taking things a step further, she added, “I’m retiring this chapter of my story with the comfort that i can depart with peace of mind seeing that all the hard work & passion put in was indeed loved & supported somewhere in the world!”
Taylor’s husband, Iman Shumpert, added his support in the comments where he pledge his undying love, “I’ve watched first hand how much blood you’ve spilled in this shit. It wasn’t for nothing baby! And we rockin no matter what u choose to do…it’s GONE GO! Love you mostest.”
In early September, Taylor and Shumpert welcomed their second child into the world, a daughter named Rue Rose Taylor. Their first born, Iman Junie Shumpert, is almost five years old.
In June of this year, Taylor released her third album, a 23-song effort titled The Album. The project debuted at No. eight on the U.S Billboard 200 chart, her first top-ten debut on the chart.
While released on Kanye West‘s label, G.O.O.D. Music, the company put almost no push behind the record with label president Pusha T failing to post about it on his social media accounts.
Two years prior, Taylor released an eight song album titled K.T.S.E.. At the time of its release, Taylor repeatedly expressed frustration with both the process and the short track list, complaining that Kanye West, who produced the album, had left her out of important decisions related to the project. While K.T.S.E. didn’t sell as many units as The Album, it was included on 13 different album of the year lists.
