In episode four of “Insecure” titled “Surviving, Okay?” both lead characters reverted to their respective means with Issa Dee (Issa Rae) attempting to convince herself that there isn’t something awkward about her relationship with Nathan Campbell (Kendrick Sampson) and Molly Carter (Yyvonne Orji) back on her dating grind, literally.
Both of their story arcs are upended by Molly’s mother (L. Scott Caldwell) who was rushed to the hospital after suffering from a stroke. Looking at Shiona Turini‘s costume choices, there was a major switcheroo moment when Issa put on Molly’s Brandon Maxwell date night dress and Molly stepped into Molly’s sweatshirt and t-shirt.
One could go deep and view their outfit exchanges as symbolic of them trying on each other’s personalities, but more so it came across as a statement on how close they’ve grown since the end of last season when their relationship was at a breaking point.
Fans of the show also pointed out something else noteworthy about the Adidas and Daniëlle Cathari tracksuit Issa borrowed from Molly to walk her French Bulldog, Flava Flav. It was the same tracksuit Molly wore when Andrew Tan (Alexander Hodge) asked her out on a date for the first time. Given that Molly and Andrew’s relationship failed, it’s hard not to think the outfit is foreshadowing problems ahead for Issa and Nathan.
From a practical standpoint, the storyline for episode four translated to fewer outfits. Molly spent the entire episode in the hospital and wore just two outfits, the black dress and Issa’s sweatshirt and jeans. Meanwhile, Issa sported just three looks, her sweatshirt and jeans, plus Molly’s dress and sweatsuit.
Labels we were able to identify in season five, episode four are as follows: Brandon Maxwell, Adidas and Daniëlle Cathari 2018 capsule and a custom sweatshirt made by Turini and artist Cleo Wade.
