Brooklyn-born and Italy-based James Garland showed his debut J6 collection this week, informed by his love of night time city style in particular the sexy chic club looks of the late ’90s and early ’00s. Comprising men’s and women’s apparel as well as accessories in the form of bags and durags, J6 is informed by an undeniable edge that exudes cool.
Garland, who was part of Hood by Air‘s original design team, cites as influences a fun mix that includes his mother, ballerina Nina Garland, ballroom icon Daesja Mizrachi LaPerla, rapper Foxy Brown and John Galliano.
Commenting on a durag dress in the collection, Garland told Vogue, “It was the first piece I designed. I’m obsessed with John Galliano, and I love the idea of how all of his dresses were cut on the bias. Growing up, I always wore a durag, and my mother would always say, you can’t wear those certain places. I kind of wanted to make a dress that was in the language of silky, bias, body-con, but had the durag as its integral piece. This is a durag dress for the red carpet.”
The debut J6 collection is now available online at j-6.it and ssense.com.
