Disney+ is now streaming “Sneakerella,” a musical remake of the classic Cinderella fairy tale. Directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, the film follows the ups and downs of El (Chosen Jacobs), a boy who has lost his mother and lives in Queens, New York, with a cruel stepfather named Trey (Bryan Terrell Clark) and two equally horrific stepbrothers. El works in Laces, his mother’s sneaker store, where he is regulated to the stockroom and frequently bullied by his stepbrothers.
Rather than a fairy godmother, El has a fairy godfather named Gustavo (Juan Chioran) who uses magic to enable him to attend a charity gala where he wears a pair of sneakers he designed. El makes a connection with a girl named Kira King (Lexi Underwood), who is the daughter of Darius King (John Salley), a former NBA player often described as sneaker royalty. While attempting to leave the event before the magic spell expires, he leaves behind his sneaker, which is found by Kira.
Originally slated to release in 2021, “Sneakerella” was delayed one more before it was finally released on May 13, 2022.
