New York-based NYForever, a non-profit working to encourage and facilitate New Yorkers to engage in gestures, big and small, has partnered with Brooklyn-born designer Johnny Nelson on a NYForever necklace. Inspired by vintage subway tokens, the charm and chain reflect a love of the city. Proceeds of the sale will go to Recess, a public art space and resource for New York artists to create work, have conversation, and build a more just and equitable creative community.
Known for his celebration of Black icons, designer Nelson partnered with Pyer Moss on the label’s 2019 collection with a gold necklace featuring the heads of 21 Black women music creatives.
Originated in 1953 with a value of 15 cents, the NY subway token was phased out for the MetroCard in 2003.
Priced from $179-$2,200, NYForever and Nelson’s necklaces and are now available johnnynelson.nyc.
