Brooklyn-based Luar as led by LVMH-Prize finalist Raul Lopez closed New York Fashion Week on Wednesday ( February 15), with a fall 2023 collection titled “Calle Pero Elegante.” Beautifully embodying the rich beauty of Brooklyn, runway looks ranged from stunning, curve-hugging coat dresses to deconstructed suits, tech outerwear, gowns and Luar’s signature Ana bag with models strutting the runway to Foxy Brown‘s “B.K Anthem.”
Commenting on his versatility as a designer with WWD prior to the presentation, Lopez, who in 2022 won the CFDA Award for accessory designer, said, “Just because you think I’m Latino or look a specific way, you are expecting me to design a specific way. I’m not going to give you what you want. I’m never going to give anybody what they want. I don’t fit in like that; you can’t put me in a box.”
While New York Fashion Week traditionally has closed with a big name label like Tom Ford or Marc Jacobs, Lopez is ushering a much-needed changing of the guard in New York, where the creative energy and the wow factor more than ever resides with emerging designers and brands.
