Bronx-born, Dominican American photographer and creative director Renell Medrano has released a short film titled “Cinches,” a short film paying ode to her upcoming in New York. Starring Tess Cecyl, the black and white white film was written and directed by Medrano. Centered by an interaction between a woman who is approached by an unseen man, the piece explores the complex nuances of flirting and tension that often take place on the streets between men and women.
Described by Medrano as “one for all my New York honeys,” the film is in part a love story, artfully celebrating the hair, the nails, the makeup, the fashion, all of which would mean little without the attitude of New York’s Black and Brown female natives who’s influence over the decades has been incredily powerful and yet barely acknowledged.
“Cinch” embodyies the raw, artful authenticity that emerges when creatives narrate their own stories. Medrano’s work offers a relatable reflection on cultural identity, making it a significant addition to contemporary cinema.
The film also queues up Medrano’s latest Ice Studios design, a pair of very of-the-moment dark denim capris pants.
