New York-based Artsy has released its 2024 market recap and end-of-year report, highlighting key trends and artists who made a significant impact on the commercial art world throughout the year. Among the report’s findings is a list of artists who saw the most notable increases in searches and inquiries in 2024. Topping this list, with an astounding 1,082% increase, is Olaolu Slawn, a Nigerian-born, London-based creative and skateboarder.
Artsy’s report attributes the surge to several factors, stating, “Artists experience surges in demand for several reasons. Their works might be featured in widely read publications or public events, or perhaps they have participated in a buzzy show or institutional exhibition that has made waves across the international art world.”
However, Slawn’s rise to prominence can also be linked to his authentic roots in streetwear and its associated subcultures, allowing him to bypass traditional pathways into mainstream success. This approach places him in the company of influential creative figures like Virgil Abloh, Kaws, and Futura to name a few, whose roots in skateboarding, graffiti, creative network and community fueled their rise, Slawn’s circle features notable peers such as Street Souk founder Iretidayo Zaccheus, Corteiz founder Clint, Ola of Vivendii, and artist Deto Black to name a few.
At just 15 years old, while still in Nigeria, Slawn was appointed creative director of Wafflesncream by Jomi Bello, the country’s first concrete skatepark and skate brand. In an interview with The Skateroom, Slawn described his work as “simple, provocative, and probably annoying.”
Slawn is widely recognized for his painted skate decks and customized Rimowa trunks. In 2023, he made history as the youngest artist to design a BRIT Award and also designed the Emirates FA Cup trophy. The following year, he collaborated with Rolex on a limited-edition Datejust, further solidifying his creative prowess.
In September 2024, Slawn’s debut solo show at London’s Saatchi Yates gallery attracted record-breaking attendance, with guests spilling onto the streets. GQ Magazine also honored him as one of its 2024 “Men of the Year.” His success continued in December with a second solo show at Saatchi Yates during Art Basel Miami Beach, where his work was also featured at the esteemed Rubell Museum.
