Bronx-born Cardi B made history last night (February 10, 2019) at The Recording Academy’s Grammy Awards show where she took home an award for best rap album for Invasion of Privacy, a project she released in April 2018. The award is historic because it marks the first time a solo woman has won the award. Lauryrn Hill won the award for The Score as a member of the Fugees in 1996.
Cardi faced formidable competition in the category, which included Mac Miller for Swimming, Nipsey Hussle for Victory Lap, Pusha-T for DAYTONA, and Travis Scott for ASTROWORLD.
The Bronx-born rapper of humble origins was nominated for five categories, including album of the year for Invasion of Privacy, song of the year: “I Like It,” best rap performance: “Be Careful,” and best pop duo/group performance for her feature on Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You.”
Cardi took the stage with her husband, Offset, by her side and thanked her team and the artists who provided features on the albums. She also thanked her daughter Kulture, who she was carrying while she finished the album and made the videos in support of it.
Tearing up at points, the 26-year-old Cardi stated, “I want to thank my daughter. I’m not just saying thank you because she’s my daughter. It’s because, you know, when I found out I was pregnant, my album was not complete, like three songs that I was for sure having. And then you know, you know how it was, we was like, we have to get this album done so I could still do videos while I’m still not showing. And it was very long nights.”
For all three of her outfits, Cardi wore Thierry Mugler haute couture gowns, as styled by Kollin Carter. On the red carpet she wore a black and white gown featuring a dramatic upturned peplum, and for her “Money” performance she flexed in a purple leopard bodysuit featuring a feather tail. She accepted her award in a white gown with fringe sleeves from Mugler’s 2007 “Les Insectes.”
Before winning the award, Cardi also performed her single “Money.”
