The Council of Fashion Designers Association (CFDA) held its annual award show in Brooklyn last night (June 3, 2019), an event marked by a changing of the guard with long time chairperson Diane von Furstenberg handing over the reins of leadership to Tom Ford.
In addition to designers, the guest list was packed with top-tier models and music creatives including Gigi Hadid (Louis Vuitton), Bella Hadid (Michael Kors), Ciara (Vera Wang), Jhené Aiko (Pyer Moss), Halima Aden (Tommy Hilfiger), Yara Shahidi (Monse), Winnie Harlow, Cindy Bruna (Monse), Joan Smalls (Pyer Moss), Teyana Taylor (Thom Browne), Halima Aden (Tommy Hilfiger) and Frida Aasen (Laquan Smith) among others.
Designer Brandon Maxwell took home the event’s top award as womenswear designer of the year. It was Maxwell’s second CFDA award, a follow up to his emerging designer award in 2016. Menswear designer of the year was awarded to Rick Owens, who wasn’t on hand at the ceremony because he missed his flight from Paris.
Jennifer Lopez was recognized with the fashion icon award, a recognition she marked with a two-piece orange design by fellow Bronx native Ralph Lauren.
