New York-based label Pyer Moss as lead by Kerby Jean-Raymond has partnered with Yellowhammer Fund to create a t-shirt whose sales will go to preserving women’s reproductive freedom in the state of Alabama. The effort is a response to recently-passed state bill that imposes a near total ban on abortion. Doctors found performing abortion under the bill can be sentenced from 10 years to life in prison.
The white t-shirt is embroidered with the phrase “Ignore all advice that starts with ‘ladies.'” The shirt references societal mores dictating what “ladies” do and don’t do. In a campaign visual, a series of black women list items so-called ladies shouldn’t do, including swearing, going anywhere by themselves and being too loud.
Similar to laws seeking to limit or eliminate abortion, the “friendly” advice dolled out to ladies is not about show care, but about controlling women’s behavior.
The t-shirts will launch on July 27, 2019 at 10:00 AM EST on pyermoss.com.
All proceeds from the sale will go to support The Yellowhammer Fund, which provides financial support to women in Alabama seeking to exercise their right to choose. If you would like to make a separate donation to Yellowhammer Fund, visit yellowhammerfund.org
