New York-based Koat NY, the brainchild of Nigerian-American Central Saint Martins alum Kelechi Mpamaugo, has unveiled their pre-spring 2027 collection. An exercise in craftsmanship, all handmade by Mpamaugo, the collection consists of layered and structured apparel, including jackets, pants, skirts and knitwear. It artfully plays with the concept of armour rooted in the Nigerian Agbada, a regal traditional garment worn on formal occasions. Koat brings its signature sportswear edge, allowing for the kind of versatility we admire.
In an exchange with designer Mpamaugo, she shared with us the inspiration behind the collection, saying, “Life asks us to carry a lot, but we still move. So the clothes are protective but not closed off. Strong but not rigid. This is my first collection since Central Saint Martins, and I challenged myself to build much of it by hand. Craftsmanship became a way to slow down and deepen my practice.”
The Koat NY collection lands at koatny.com on August 7, 2026.
