Meek Mill finally drops the long-awaited 4/4, a four song mixtape, including singles “Pray For ‘Em,” “I’m Da Plug,” “Gave Em Hope” and “FBH.” There’s also a video (below) mixing snippets from all four songs. Most notoriously it includes beats from Drake and Future’s “mixtape” What A Time To Be Alive. On “Gave Em Hope,” Mill isn’t backing down from his beef with Drake, shouting him out with the line, “Let them niggers have the Grammys, we have the streets, we rich already. And my chick the baddest.” referencing Drake’s Grammy nominated Meek diss song “Back To Back.” No doubt, the released intentionally was droppedjust before the first episode in 2016 of OVO radio.
Music-wise at this point it’s almost impossible to separate Mill’s music from the context of his beef with Drake, both artists seemed to be inextricably tied to each other in what often feels like a messed up death spiral, not unlike Voldemort and Harry Potter. Obviously it’s created bigger setbacks for Meek but Drake’s credibility has taken hits, too.
And here we are months later and everything still feels like an unresolved blurry mess, which, will not be resolved easily. Anyway, it’s good to hear Mill spitting and back on his grind. Unabashedly, we’re rooting for him.
