Bucking the usual trend of music arriving after its promised, talented musician Dev Hynes delivers his third Blood Orange album, Freetown Sounds, three days early, along with a video for the single “Augustine.” Including 17 songs, the album is now available to stream on multiple platforms (including Tidal below).
In an in-depth New Yorker review of the album, it is pointed out that Hynes posted a message on Instagram prior to the album’s launch, explaining it was intended for those who’ve been told they’re “not black enough, too black, too queer, not queer the right way.” In other words, music and lyrics that examine concepts of expression and identity, very much a topical theme as of late.
