Gorgeous singer/songwriter Jhené Aiko visited Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning show (January 20), hosted by Ebro, Laura Stylez and Rosenberg, to talk up her new single “Maniac,” and covered a range of topics, including music, the election and of course her relationship with rapper Big Sean.
In speaking about writing lyrics and making videos with an overtly sexual edge, Aiko pointed out there is a double standard that applies to women who speak openly about their sexuality. “I think people see me, and I look younger than I am and you know, even just being a girl, being a woman, it’s always you know more shocking for some reason, but it’s like yeah I have an eight-year-old daughter so I definitely have had sex before,” said Aiko.
The interview was conducted on January 20th, the day of inauguration, and naturally the topic turned to politics. Aiko spoke about her support for Bernie Sanders, which included performing at a fundraiser in Harlem. She added while she was bummed about the election results, she wasn’t overly depressed. “The world has gone through crazy stuff, you know what I mean and it’s up to us to keep hope alive,” said Aiko.
To wrap up the exchange, the Hot 97 crew did its best to get Aiko to open about about her divorce from Dot Da Genius and her relationship with Big Sean’s ex Ariana Grande, but Aiko kept it cool and said she always stays focused on “move on and move along.”
When asked about Big Sean’s music, she said, “I think that he’s one of the best rapper ever. I personally have never been around any other rapper who can rap as good as him.” When asked to provide a top five rapper listed, Aiko noted the only artists she’s obsessive about are Tupac and John Mayer, who she’s worked with on music.
