It was close to 30 years ago that Barbara Kruger created a memorable piece of work titled “Untitled (Your Body Is a Battleground),” a silkscreen made in support of the 1989 Women’s March on Washington in 1989, which came about in response to rising opposition to women’s right to choose.
In tribute to Kruger’s piece and a reminder that the battle continues, curator Wendy Vogel has assembled a diverse group of artists to present under a Volta NY exhibition of the same name.
Featured artists include Zachari Fabri, Nona Faustine, Melissa Joiri Minaya, Kent Monkman, Deborah Roberts, Sable Elyse Smith, Melissa Vandenberg, Carmen Winant, among others.
Having visited the event, we were more than impressed by exhibit, a 2,600-square-foot, purple carpeted space in the center of Pier 90 where warmth, connection, and creativity abounded.
From artist Nona Faustine’s observation on the lack of brown faces attending the show to our conversation with Texas-based artist Deborah Roberts, who joyfully expressed,”No more ramen!” at the sight of her work being sold at an impressive rate, Volta’s boutique art fair concept is alive and flourishing.
Vogel’s “Untitled (Your Body Is a Battleground),” installment at Volta New York’s 10th anniversary event is open at Pier 90 from March 1–5, 2017.
