In the midst of a North American tour, Bay area rapper Lil Debbie has dropped XXIII, an EP featuring five tracks, released through Amsterdam label Barong Family.
Debbie made her acquaintance with the label while touring in Europe last year, a visit that led to an appearance on a Barong Family compilation album in August 2016. Commenting on XXIII in a press release, label founder, Yellow Claw (aka Jim Taihuttu and Nils Rondhuis) wrote, “Working with Lil Debbie was a blast. Her approach to rap lends itself amazingly well to our guys’ production styles. From Moksi’s dance floor detonations to Cesqeaux’s heavy drops, she not only holds her own, but embodies these tracks.”
The EP is a move in a new sound direction for Debbie, whose confident vocals are combined with hardcore, electronic dance beats. The released is highlighted by the Cesqueaux-produced “Today,” a true bop that nicely adds a far out edge to Debbie’s focused approach.
The EP follows her first album, “Debbie,” which hit No. 41 on the Billboard charts, significant placement for an independent, female artist.
