Frank Ocean understands how obsessive his fans are, an awareness reflected by his decision to make widely available an interlude that played early on during episode three of his blonded Radio program with Apple’s Beats One Radio.
Backed by the track “I Love Sloane” by Delroy Edwards, the just over one-minute interlude includes a conversation between a man and a woman that sounds like it was recorded in a car (at one point an app providing directions interrupts their conversation). In the exchange, the woman is irritated by the man making a joking reference about (what sounds like) having a dick in his butt. The man (who happens to have the best laugh), tries to shrug off his statement, at first saying he was joking and then added he wasn’t speaking about himself, none of which the woman is having.
Without getting too deep because context is lacking, the interlude does a good job of capturing how people in general react to the topic of males and anal sex, which is to say with shock and horror, making the “Experiences” a quiet commentary on the constant hostility one is faced with as a gay male.
On another level, it’s an exchange that brings to mind the “Be Yourself” interlude on Blonde that featured Rosie Watson, the mother of one of Frank’s childhood friends. While the topic is different, there is what seems to be a generational divide between the two individuals in the exchange that is consistent.
