Interscope-signed rapper Kamaiyah brings the ’90s party vibes in the visual for “Build You Up.” Directed by Damien Sandoval, the visual features the rapper and friends dancing and partying Oakland style in locations including a BART platform and the Grand Lake Theater.
Dance moves and fashion further tap into the look and feel of ’90s-era rap videos plus lyric’s tap into Queen Latifah’s message of unity and lifting up those who need it.
On the fashion featured in the video, Ill Ya Ya said, “My dancers have on TLC shirts and Cross Colours clothing in the “Build You Up” video because TLC is one of my biggest influences homage paid.”
In addition to the labels she called out, Kamaiyah is also wearing a Supreme and North Face set from Supreme’s spring 2017 line that’s paired with Patrick Ewing “Remix” sneakers, also released in spring 2017. Later she and her dancers wear Joyrich hockey shirts. As well, the video opens with a close up on dancers wearing Melody Ehsani socks.
Fresh off of winning a spot in XXL‘s Freshman 2017 class, this is the first music Kamaiyah has dropped since delivering her 2016 album, A Good Night in the Ghetto. She’s currently working on her next project, Don’t Ever Get It Twisted, though as of now there’s isn’t a release date.
