Tidal has released part two of Brooklyn rapper Jay-Z‘s exchange with “Rap Radar,” a podcast hosted by Elliott Wilson and Brian “B.Dot” Miller.
The exchange started off with a discussion of “Smile” a song about Jay-Z’s mother, and then transitioned to Jay proudly gush about the rapping ability of his daughter, Blue Ivy, who was featured on a 4:44 bonus track titled “Blue’s Freestyle/We Family.”
He also explained his babies’ name, with Rumi named after the Persian poet of the same name and the boy’s name, Sir, inspired by his regal carriage.
“Rumi is our favorite poet, so it was for our daughter,” he explained. “Sir was like, man, come out the gate. He carries himself like that. He just came out, like, Sir.”
He also discussed the timing of the album versus the tour (which kicks off September 2, 2017), explaining he intentionally planned a gap so he would have time to bond with his twins.
On the topic of being the first writer inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Jay-Z said he takes his writing very seriously and appreciated the recognition, but wondered why it took so long for the genre of rap to be recognized.
In speaking on beef, Jay-Z said he’s checked out of the part of the game and is no longer interested in sparring lyrically with his peers. Jay-Z and his hosts then went on to spend quite a bit of time debating the ranking of his various albums.
The conversation segued into the importance of discussing the trauma of growing up in poor and working class minority neighborhoods as well as stress brought on by fame. Jay-Z pointed to Amy Winehouse as someone he believes was damaged by her inability to deal with the unusual demands that come with celebrity.
