Vogue has chosen Katy Perry and Rihanna to grace the cover of its annual Met Gala issue. The placement matters because it’s viewed as an unofficial call out of the event’s strongest look/s. Perry wore a Versace gown adorned with massive angel wings, while Gala co-host Rihanna wore an ornate gown designed by John Galliano for Maison Margiela.
This is Perry’s second year in a row on the cover. Last year she was featured with Pharrell Williams. Rihanna has been on the cover twice before. She was on the cover of the 2015 issue, wearing her famed gold Guo Pei gown and with Beyoncé shared the 2014 cover, wearing a white midriff revealing Stella McCartney gown. She’s attended the event a total of eight times, starting in 2007 when she wore a white Georges Chakra halter gown.
In addition to Perry and Rihanna, celebrities who receive on a shout out on the cover include, gala co-hosts Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace, George Clooney, Madonna, Emma Stone, Kendall Jenner, Chadwick Boseman, Cardi B, Donald Glover, Blake Lively, Lena Waithe, Tiffany Haddish and Zendaya.
Of course there’s always the question of what’s political and what’s legitimate recognition of a truly beautiful gown. Some of the celebs we were surprised weren’t mentioned on the cover are Solange, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Priyanka Chopra and Lana del Rey, who was on our top three list.
On another note, Anna Wintour can keep her attempt to bring back Marchesa from the grave it belongs in vis-a-vis Scarlett Johansson.
