Prior to the release of Queen, Nicki Minaj tweeted on August 1, 2018 about possibly delaying the release of the album because of a delay related to receiving permission from Tracy Chapman on a sample.
At the time, Minaj wrote, “So there’s a record on #Queen that features 1of the greatest rappers of all time. Had no clue it sampled the legend #TracyChapman – do I keep my date & lose the record? Or do I lose the record & keep my date?”
Minaj initially moved out the date to August 17th, but surprised fans when she dropped it on the original August 10th release date.
Today, DJ Funk Flex debuted “Sorry” featuring Nas, which Minaj ultimately was unable to include on Queen because Chapman wouldn’t clear the sample. On Twitter following the release of the song, Minaj tweeted/deleted, “Sis said no ♀.”
The song borrows its arrangement from Foxy Brown’s reggae single “Sorry,” which takes its lyrics from Chapman’s single “Baby Can I Hold You.”
On the song, Nas implies he had his eye on Minaj while she was still dating Meek Mill (or Safari) when he spits, “Flexing with your ex, I couldn’t disrespect ya.”
