New York-based jewelry designer Jules Kim has launched Bijules Incubator, an experimental jewelry mentorship space in collaboration with WallPlay’s OnCanal, an organization whose mission is to repurpose vacant retail spaces around the world and utilize them for public good.
Commenting on the effort, which launched in early October 2018, Kim stated, “My goal for the Bijules Incubator is to help better the jewelry and fashion markets with integrity and responsibility. I intend to walk incubatees through a filter of experience, and a framework for a creative process I have developed throughout my own career. I want to focus on building an ethical and moral compass for jewelry designers, so they’re prepared to enter the real-world market with all of the proper resources to grow and sustain their business.”
Bijules Incubator mentees include Charlie Goldcap also known as the King of Canal Street Grillz. The 72-year-old Goldcap formerly operated on Canal Street but was forced out by rising rents and a change in shopper demographics. Part of Kim’s efforts include celebrating Goldcap’s legacy by creating a archive of his prior efforts. ” I’m building his living legacy with Polaroid portraits of his clients past and present…need to celebrate those who made and continue to make history!” Kim wrote on Instagram.
Recent FIT graduate Angely Martinez is also a part of the effort. Martinez will use the space to work on her debut collection, which will be presented during New York City Jewelry Week in November
The Bijules Incubator is located on 322 B Canal Street, between Church and Mercer Street. If you’re interested in a being fitted for Goldcap grill, appointments can be made in store or via email info@bijulesnyc.com.
