Universal Pictures has dropped the trailer for Us, a follow up to director Jordan Peele’s widely acclaimed thriller Get Out. Us is set to hit theaters March 15, 2019.
Recalling the scenic driving scenes of Get Out, the trailer opens with a shot of the Wilson family on the road as the 1995 single “I Got 5 On It” by hip hop duo Luniz plays over the speakers. The family of four is made up of Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o), her husband Gabe (Winston Duke) and their two children (Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex), all of whom are headed to Adelaide’s beach where she grew up on the northern coast of California Foreshadowing trouble ahead, the Wilson boy wears a Jaws t-shirt.
Good times on the beach are upturned by the appearance of a creepy figure on the beach who only the boy appears to see. When the family returns home and are settling in for the night, four figures appear in the driveway. The twist? They’re not monsters, they’re The Tethered, doppelgängers of the Wilson family.
While the family is black, Peele has said the film is more about an examination of self. In an interview with SW, Peele explained, “I think the main idea that went into writing this film is that we’re our own worst enemy, and that idea created this monster, The Tethered. I wanted to forge this new mythology that explored our duality and the duality of the characters.”
Still, Peele acknowledges the significance of the family’s race. Said Peele, “I can’t think of a horror movie of this nature with a family in the center of it that uses a black family. So I knew just by putting an African-American family in the lead role, already we would be exploring cinematic uncharted territory.”
