Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, has announced the change to the scroll was a test that went too far. On Twitter, he wrote, “That was supposed to be a very small test that went broad by accident. Should be fixed now. If you’re still seeing it simply restart the app. Happy holidays!”
The main feed will be returned to the previous up and down scroll. Instagram hasn’t said whether it will eventually convert to a sideways scroll.

Instagram today (December 27, 2018) has begun to roll out an update changing the way users scroll through the main feed. Rather than scrolling up and down with a swipe, the new feed scrolls from side to side with a tap.
If you haven’t yet received the update, the dynamic mimics that of Instagram Stories and in fact the company introduced the change to users with a screen that reads, “Tap through posts just like you tap through stories.”
Reflecting the massive popularity of the app, the story of the change in the feed is now trending on Twitter, where users appear to be uniformly upset.
As of yet, Instagram hasn’t provided an update explaining the switch to a new feed on its press site.
Check out the info screen below, along with a screen recording of how the new scroll works.
Sorry about that, this was supposed to be a very small test but we went broader than we anticipated. 😬
