As part of a current exhibit in Milan, Italian-born fashion photographer Paolo Roversi has unveiled previously unseen images of Rihanna that are part of a set of black and white photos shot for her ANTI album launch in 2016.
Titled “Storie,” the new photographs are being shown at the Palazzo Reale in Milan, an exhibit that is running concurrently with the Vogue Photo Festival. Roversi is based in Paris and shot Rihanna in his studio in 2014.
Roversi spoke with Vogue about the Rihanna images in November and described her as much more than a pretty face. “I photographed her for an album cover in 2015,” said Roversi. Here in the exhibition we’re showing never-before-seen images of her. She’s fantastic, a true artist. We worked in my studio for two days. Her presence is extraordinary: how she moves, the confidence, the control over her body, the energy, the sensuality. She’s completely aware of the power of her beauty. She’s an artist, in the very same way that a good model is also an artist, not only a pretty face.”
The widely-admired Roversi is known for his mastery of light and shadow, using a vintage 8 x 10 camera to create deeply textured images that have the look and feel of a masterfully-composed oil painting.
The Rihanna photographs as well as many others are on display at Palazzo Reale in Milan from November 16, 2017 through December 17th.
