First launched in 2012, the Roshe Run was a surprise break out hit for Nike, embraced as it was by young, city living males, who up until then had pretty much eschewed wearing kicks with anything other than leather uppers. Priced at just $70 when it first launched, sneakers lovers embraced as a modern looking silhouette that rounded out their sneaker wardrobes. And when technology made it possible to add graphic prints to uppers, it proved to provide the perfect canvas.
This Roshe Run slip on for women is a perfect extension of the original silhouette. Probably it was at least partially inspired by the Skechers GoWalk silhouette, which is also a slip-on that first hit the market in 2012 (versus Nike’s first showing of the Roshe Run slip-on in 2013). That may sound ludicrous to any dedicated sneaker fan who views Skechers as sneaker brand not to be taken seriously, but the GoWalk has been a massive hit and among some retailers has seen better sales to women than more traditional athletic brands, including Nike, Adidas and Reebok.
Nike is by nature more of a leader than a follower when it comes to design, but it’s not so obsessed with innovation it won’t nick a good design idea here and there as makes sense in the evolution of an already established silhouette.
