Strictly an apparel and accessories brand since its founding in 1998, Vancouver-based Lululemon is stepping into the footwear space through a partnership with California-based APL (Athletic Propulsion Labs). Priced between $165-$195, the shoes will be available at 23 select stores in cities including New York, Denver, Scottsdale, Arizona, Seattle and Atlanta.
APL was founded in 2009 by twins Adam and Ryan Goldston in 2009. The key to its footwear is the brand’s proprietary Propelium technology, a lightweight material used in the sole that adds bounce. In addition to Lulu, APL shoes are also carried on athleticpropulsionlabs.com, along with high-end retailers like Barneys and Saks Fifth Avenue.
We visited the Lulu at its most popping store, located in Flatiron aka the Fitness District (114 5th Avenue), and the women’s shoes are actually cuter in real life than the online images thanks to pop provided by the use of Lurex thread (which doesn’t show up well in images) along with a diamond weave knit pattern, both of which give the shoe a unique, feminine flair. The pink and earth-toned color stories are also appealing.
