Though there were lots of great looks for the Met Gala, each of us (Lois & Samia) had a clear hands down favorite pick. For me it was Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and her dress by Balmain, with the label’s head designer, Olivier Rousteing, piling on all the over-the-top lux detailing the label is known for. Leopard print, leather sleeves, gold chain details, it was all there, capped by gigantic bamboo earrings plus flawless hair and makeup.
Samia fell head over heels for Eyrkah Badu’s dramatic black jumpsuit (images below) contrasted with a three-quarter length white dress coat that coordinated with a Pharrell-esque over-sized top hat. Both the coat and the hat featured matching rhinestone detailing. Like Whiteley, Badu’s earrings were also dramatic and blingtastic. Badu is the face of Givenchy’s Spring ad campaign so it comes as no surprise that her look was designed by the label’s head creative, Riccardo Tisci.
Traditionalists might say that both looks defied the show’s celebration of Charles James, a designer known for spectacular, sculptured gowns featuring intricate draping techniques. However, one could argue that while not exact replicas, their looks are modern interpretations true to James’ love affair with head-turning, statement-making evening pieces. Because what is most true in fashion is nothing stays the same forever.
