Nicki Minaj released last night a 15 minute short called “The Pinkprint Movie.” It features three songs from her just released album, “The Crying Game,” “Grand Piano” and “I Lied.” Much of the past year has been a reality tour for Minaj, stripping off the layers of makeup and hair and shedding alter egos to reveal a truer self. The video and the album continue the theme, putting up for deep scrutiny and examination her ten-year-plus relationship with Safaree Samuels, who she recently split from. Her willingness to speak about him and her struggles in dealing with the break up in an of itself is a big reveal because while ever-present in her life, Minaj said little about their relationship while they were together and even now, there is no mention of him in her Wikipedia page.
In pop culture it’s always fascinating when a celebrity goes from being very private to very public about a personal relationship and such is the case with Minaj, who as always keeps the watchers and prognosticators on their toes. A smart move on her part or a heartfelt reveal? Maybe a bit of both.
