When Coach as designed by the then newly-appointed Stuart Vevers showed its first presentation for Autumn 2014, critics were absolutely charmed by the sweater featuring an Apollo rocket ship graphic (above middle) and subsequently it was spotted on a bunch of celebs. Stylecaster was quick to point out that the popular graphic was inspired by a sweater worn by Billy (above left), a character in The Shining, a movie released in 1981. Yesterday, Prada showed a facsimile of the graphic in its women’s presentation for 2016, along with some other graphics that had a similarly old-timey toys feel to them.
Normally we don’t sweat it when one massive brand copies from another one, but this one was too in your face to resist. The British Vevers has spent some time on the European accessories scene, having led the design team for both Loewe and Mulberry so probably this pilfering of his idea has him feeling some way. If you’re Vevers, what do you do? Probably feel equal parts ticked and amused, like okay Miuccia, so much for originality!
