After the success of her rendition of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” aka “Cell U Lar Device,” singer Eryka Badu last night at midnight released the mixtape Caint Use My Phone including a total of 11 tracks all themed around phone calls, a concept that links the story line of”Hotline Bling” with Badu’s iconic “Tyrone” single that famously ends with the oft-riffed upon line “but you can’t use my phone.” Recorded with producer Zach Witness in Dallas, the mixtape surprisingly doesn’t include Drake, who Badu has described as a friend (hmm), but does include Andre 3000 (the father of her son Seven) plus various emerging talents, overall an effort that cements her position as an influential artist/musician with a vision and an ability to constantly reinvent her sound.
