Bi-annual Brooklyn-based Top Rank magazine has launched a podcast series with the first one themed on the humble yet iconic gold nameplate, a jewelry piece long a mainstay of poor and working class minority neighborhoods. Editors Marcel Rosa-Salas and Isabel Flower sat down to discuss “the nameplate’s formal qualities, its material and social history, and its relevance in American culture today.” Titled “The Personal Is Political,” the two chat along with multiple guests chat about the nameplate’s origins, the aesthetics of taste and its relations to design, as well as cultural appropriation, among other topics.
It seems like a simple concept for women to chat about the significance of gold nameplates, but in reality it’s huge simply because there remains a dearth of women of color providing their views on everyday cultural topics.
