Q&A: Resurrection Vintage’s Katy Rodriguez

May 19, 2016. Leave a Comment

Founded in New York in 1996 by Katy Rodriguez and Mark Haddaway, Resurrection Vintage has been a long standing resource for vintage high-end couture shoes and apparel. To celebrate the boutique’s 20 years in business and a new location on Great Jones Street in New York, the shop in the midst of displaying a rare collection of Bulgary jewelry, out of print fashion books and Alexander McQueen couture apparel and accessories from 1990 to 2010.

Recently we caught up with Rodriguez about what vintage trends are big for this spring, along with what is heating up for autumn 2016.

Q:Do you stock to reflect the collectible value of a piece or do you keep trends of the moment in mind?
KR: We buy what we love. We love fashion so we are always coming from the heart and trying to connect with designers that make work in the same way. It’s very intuitive. The “collectible” part is always secondary to the “Is it great?” question.
Q:Do you see a correlation between the runway collections shown to the requests you receive?
KR: Yes, absolutely. Especially because past eras are often referenced on the runway. People also love the “real thing” so we have a lot of purists as clients.
Q:Have you seen any surges for particular designers or pieces?
KR:People are very interested in the 90s right now. The overly sexy may have finally run its course. We have a lot of clients looking for interesting clothing, something more cerebral. Martin Margiela, Helmut Lang, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford and Raf Simons are very popular among collectors and fashionable people right now.
Q:What have been the top most wanted items/brands for this spring?
KR: A whole lot of Margiela and then the flip side is Ossie Clark and Yves Saint Laurent. It seems our client wants to be interesting and/or pretty. Sort of a ’70s/’90s thing going on, which makes perfect sense.
Q: What is the most wanted label overall regardless of seasons
KR: Great pieces. Really stand out designs. Does not matter the designer or season, it just has to be great. That’s what we do.
Q: Any unexpected requests that had nothing to do with trends?
KR: Country Western t-shirts for Miley Cyrus.
Q: Can you foresee any trends for this coming Fall?
KR: We live in a bubble at Resurrection. I think that’s what keeps our vision pure and unique. So again, we will be coming from the heart. We will be showing Helmut Lang in September. We’ve been working on that collection for years but it seems from the recent excitement around Mr Lang’s work we are right on time.

Part of his debut collection with the retailer, the men's "giant fit" chino priced at 89.50 is 100% sold out! Relecting the popularity of the silhouette, the women's wide-leg pleated cargo is also sold out.

With wider fits and chino swinging back into popularity, we can't help but wonder what sneakers and shoes will be coming along for the ride. Any nominations?

The GOAT Serena Williams says farewell to her care The GOAT Serena Williams says farewell to her career as a professional tennis player in the September issue of American Vogue.

In the cover story, which is a must read, Williams shares some thoughts on her evolution away from tennis and says,"Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family. Maybe I’d be more of a Tom Brady if I had that opportunity. Don’t get me wrong: I love being a woman, and I loved every second of being pregnant with Olympia. I was one of those annoying women who adored being pregnant and was working until the day I had to report to the hospital—although things got super complicated on the other side. And I almost did do the impossible: A lot of people don’t realize that I was two months pregnant when I won the Australian Open in 2017."

The cover editorial was styled by Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, who in 2020 became the first black woman to style a U.S. Vogue cover.

This cover was also one of the last projects hairstylist #LatishaChong worked on before she sadly passed away in July this year.
