Adidas has partnered with sustainable manufacturer Parley Ocean Plastic to create the world’s first running shoe using ocean waste, specifically illegal deep-sea gillnets collected in the coastal area of the Maldives. The material was used by Adidas to work with Adidas’s tailored fiber technology, an upper that responds to the shape of the user’s foot. This shoe is the first in a series of products Adidas will produce using Parley Ocean Plastic.
As part of the collaboration, Adidas and Parley are offering free pairs through an Instagram contest, starting June 8th, World Ocean Day. Entrants are asked to create a video that shows how they pledge to avoid single-use plastic items and support Parley’s Ocean Plastic Program. The competition closes on July 31, 2016.
