Delivered as promised on the day of her birth, New York via Philly rapper Chynna Rogers has released a six-track mixtape titled “Ninety,” which more than just her her born day, marks a sort of rebirth as marked by three months of sobriety. As a skilled spitter, Rogers works her lethally steady flow throughout the project handily sorting through all the heavy feels that arise when one is attempting to navigate the world through an newly unimpeded lens.
In a note to Fader, Roger addressed her wish to speak to life’s dark side, and wrote, “This project sums up my last two years. They got pretty dark and still amazingly spiritual. I tapped into parts of myself I otherwise would never have seen.”
Stand outs are “Untitled,” produced by Heaven in Stereo and “Reeper,” produced by Park Ave., both of which nicely play Rogers’ mean (af!!) spit game against a tripped out back beat. Rogers steps out with “So Much More,” a song with some shimmy in which she reveals a more vulnerable take on her flow. It’s sweet yet still tough.
We interviewed Rogers last month and got her thoughts on a bunch of topics, including her music, rap battles and her views on the fashion industry; follow the links to view part one, part two & part three.
