Nicki Minaj Calls Into The Breakfast Club Post

October 17, 2016. Leave a Comment

Post-Tidal performance at the Barclays Center over the weekend, Nicki Minaj called into The Breakfast Club and discussed her appearance, as well as her recent Marie Claire cover, and plans for new music. She also provided her take on the environment for female rappers. One topic noticeable not covered was Minaj’s relationship with Meek Mill.

Check out the highlights and video of the call below.

On Lauryn Hill…Minaj said her meeting at the Tidal event was their first time meeting. Later in the interview, she said she told Hill her Myseducation album changed lives.

On her Marie Claire cover…Minaj clarified that the images were taken months ago. She said she love the writer and everything about the cover.

On new music….Minaj said she’s been in New York “for a while” and is working on new music. She added that her new show with ABC has been postponed. “We wanted to make some changes with the pilot,” said Minaj, who said she felt like some changes needed to be made to improve the quality of the project.

On the changing landscape for female emcees…Minaj gave props to Young M.A. and Dej Loaf, adding that it’s tough for not just for female but all rappers to be taken seriously. “It’s always difficult becoming a staple in hip hop. It’s only a few superstars in hip hop.” She added, “Shout out to all the women coming up that are paying attention to lyrics.” She added that she loves Lil Uzi, Fetty Wap with whom she’s recorded music, which will soon be released.

On a mixtape vs. an album…Charlamagne said he would prefer she release a mixtape though DJ Envy said he would prefer an album. Minaj noted when she was in her mixtape phase, she felt free to make mistakes and it helped her feel more free and take more chances. She said, “I wouldn’t tell anyone if I was working on a mixtape, I would just surprise my fans with it.” Minaj addressed her putting out a fake album.

On who twerks better, her or Safaree…Minaj said, “You have to compare my  [dressing room] twerk video on Instagram. He can’t do better than that,” said Minaj, who conceded her twerk on stage was lacking. Charlamagne agreed her dressing room video was better and that she seemed to be holding back on stage. Minaj agreed, and explained photographers were supposed to be gone by that point and she felt self-conscious.

I think rehearsal was better😏 😩

On her hair…Minaj said she loves having it long, and said, “That’s the new wave, having your hair in the crack of your ass.”

On buttholes…Charlamagne and Minaj debated how to best clean them and Charlamagne said he cleans in the shower and has a bidet. Minaj asked if he was okay with women inserting fingers in his butt. Charlamange said “No, that’s too much, strictly tongue.”

Scathing 5,400-word report via The Cut's Tahirah H Scathing 5,400-word report via The Cut's Tahirah Hairston on Kerby Jean-Raymond whose label Pyer Moss appears to no longer be operational.

Check out an excerpt below.

Ten years in, Jean-Raymond’s star has only risen. He hangs out with celebrities (Tracee Ellis Ross, Brent Faiyaz), made a cameo on Insecure, and drives flashy cars (a McLaren 720S, an Aston Martin Superleggera, a Porsche GT3 RS). Meanwhile, his brand is nearly nonexistent.

There is no Pyer Moss boutique. The clothing celebrated on the runway was mostly not available to anybody who didn’t have a celebrity stylist to pull it for them, and company insiders complained that quality control was so uneven that at times what was produced was too flawed to be sold. Jean-Raymond sometimes missed deadlines, didn’t always pay bills, started other projects, and alienated allies. He referred to Pyer Moss as an “art project” and seemed reluctant to make practical choices. Among the fashion insiders who had cheered his rise, there has been a growing feeling that he has wasted an opportunity to build something important.

The last straw for many of his early supporters was his couture show in July 2021. Titled “WAT U IZ,” and put on in the U.S. during Paris Couture Week, it was a tribute to the various innovations that Black people have been responsible for, often without credit. The models came down the runway decked out in a jar of peanut butter and a traffic light. A lot of it wasn’t really clothing, much less couture. Even if the professional critics and other members of the fashion press seemed hesitant to publicly express their disappointment, they whispered among each other that he’d lost the plot of his brand.
