Combining retro sport flair with an African twist, sisters Joan and Doreen Caven have released label Pop Caven’s fall 2016 collection of sweatshirts. Rooted in their Nigerian heritage the sisters created Pop Caven (previously Caven Etomi) in 2013 as a fusion of art, fashion and design.
For fall, Pop Caven brought in branding elements from global brands like Fila, Pepsi and Coca-Cola and adapted them to Nigerian culture with inspiration from Fela Kuti, the kola nut and palm wine. A standout from the capsule is the Africa for USA sweatshirt, a reverse on the 1985 “We are the World” campaign that featured the tagline “USA for Africa” tees. In an interview with Nataal, the siblings explained the inspiration for the graphic as a gesture of solidarity with the African American community’s struggles.
