It started out innocently enough with singer Erykah Badu posting a video on Instagram, in which she’s wearing a pair of white boots and a puffy jacket. In response, a follower wrote that the jacket reminded her of the one Solange wore to the Met Ball in May.
Irritated that she was being compared, Badu uploading another video letting it be known she bought her puffy jacket back in December. In a post titled “Petty Receipts Monday” that tagged Solange, a fiery Badu emphatically stated, “Uh, I had my coat back in December, I just wore it in January. Solange didn’t wear hers ’til the Met Ball and that was a long time after. I am the originator, I don’t have no stylist Beebee, it’s all me BeeBee.” At the same time, her daughter, Puma, added some supportive ad-libs on the couch next to her.
Badu noted her coat was designed by Rick Owens and indeed, there is a January image on her Instagram of her wearing a Rick Owens puffer jacket. Not sure it actually matters, but Solange’s Met Ball puffer was designed by Thom Browne.
It’s hard to say if Badu is genuinely bothered by someone saying she’s following Solange’s lead or she’s just having some fun kicking up some dust and at the same time reminding people she’s no lightweight when it comes to fashion. For what it’s worth, the Michelin Man puffer jacket trend has been around for a hot minute with Rihanna wearing the look all throughout 2016.
Even though fashion feuds amuse us to no end, in reality the best outcome would be if Texans Badu and Solange both laugh it off and end up in the studio collaborating as a result.
