Atlanta rapper Future has released a video for mega-hit single”Mask Off,” with a Colin Tilley-directed visual featuring Amber Rose as the leading lady. The big budget video is introduced with a sequence showing a convenience store heist, which leads to a street shoot out that escalates into general mayhem a la The Purge.
Future meanwhile stays calm, cool and collected accompanied by Amber Rose in car scenes and DJ Esco in street scenes. And while some have pointed out Rose is friends with Blac Chyna, who not so long ago was dating Future, the video for Rose probably was nothing more or less than a good look along with a nice-sized check, all of which means it’s excluded from any discussions related to girl codes.
The song “Mask Off” is the No. 1 single off of Future’s eponymous album, which was released in February, and followed a week later by Hndrxx. Despite the tight release dates, both albums debuted as No. 1 on Billboard’s top 200 chart, making Future the first artist ever to debut two different albums at No. 1 in consecutive weeks.
The Metro Boomin-produced single received a boost from the streets through a viral “Mask Off” challenge featuring people dancing and playing the flute instrumental featured in the song. Interestingly, the flute and other elements from the song are sampled from “Prison Song,” a song featured on the soundtrack for “Selma” a late ’70s musical based on the life of Martin Luther King.
